Story and Details

North American Specification (NAS) Defenders didn't last long in the U.S. This fact shows in the small number of magazine advertisements created for the model. You'll only find NAS Defender 90 ads published between the years 1993 and 1997 - the short lifespan of the truck due to increasing regulations Land Rover couldn't justify complying with because NAS Defenders were such a small portion of their total sales.

The limited nature of the Defenders not only makes the actual trucks special, but also these original advertisements. And this ad, featuring a rhino chasing a Coniston Green Defender 90 Station Wagon may be the most compelling... It follows the consistent theme and layout Grace & Rothschild conceived in 1987 when the ad agency helped launch the Range Rover in the U.S. - a cleverly written headline with perfectly coordinating, beautiful, outdoorsy imagery. And about the scene here, I'm fortunate to know the story behind it - told directly to me by an adman who was an art director at Grace & Rothschild. His name is Allen Richardson and he was front and center at the photoshoot for this advertisement. He fondly remembers, “we went to an animal park in South Carolina. The rhino was named Tank. He had terrible eyesight, but he responded to his trainer’s voice. So we took the back door off the Defender 90, the trainer sat in the back and called out to Tank until he started following the vehicle. We picked up the speed until he was chasing it. That shot is basically un-retouched. He was really chasing the vehicle.” In fact, beyond this ad, Allen shared with me the outtake photos showing Tank colliding with the Defender and pushing it off the road.

Although the message of the ad is about not stopping (since you're being chased by a rhino), funnily the actual ad does the opposite. It's truly the kind of magazine ad you can't help pump the brakes on your perusing and take a look. It stands by itself as a great example of a brand communicating to a market. And knowing the story behind it, from a primary source, makes it that much more special.

Looks fantastic framed! Beautiful print from a great seller.

I met Nick at the 2024 Windup Watch Fair in NYC and found his friendliness and passion for curating great vintage ads and prints for fellow enthusiasts contagious. Nick worked with me to find the perfect framing setup for this print and was very communicative and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. He even took the time to dig up additional information about the history and context of the print, which he included when he sent the framed print to me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product, which is now displayed proudly in my office. I highly recommend Ad Patina to anyone who loves cars, watches, sports or vintage artwork of any kind.

    Beautiful ad

This ad is lovely in person - great mix of colors and fonts and the green complements the patina of the magazine paper perfectly. As usual, Nick only sources and sells in the best condition!

    Incredible addition

Picked this ad up at Windup Watch Fair NYC ‘24. Absolutely ecstatic to say that this is now the 7th Ad in my collection. As anyone who has worked with him will agree, Nick is truly one of the most knowledgeable and overall greatest humans I’ve had the opportunity of working with in this hobby. Can’t wait to add more 🤟

    Made for an awesome gift!

I bought this for a friend of mine’s birthday who is a big fan of the 911 and also just bought a new house. He loved it and is excited to hang it up in his new office. I had Nick frame the ad too and it turned out perfect. I definitely see myself being another in the future.

    Amazing as always!

Working with Nick at Ad Patina has been a fantastic experience! Over the years, we’ve purchased several vintage ads from him, and each time, the customer service has been exceptional. Nick genuinely goes above and beyond—he even tracked down a specific ad I was searching for, which meant a lot. The quality of his framing is outstanding as well; each piece arrives beautifully preserved and ready to display. If you’re looking for unique, well-curated ads with top-tier service, I highly recommend Ad Patina!
