Story and Details
The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is a Grail for many. It remains basically unchanged since its debut in 1956 - a testament to its great design. It’s no longer just a super-comfortable piece of furniture, or as Charles and Ray Eames describe it, “a special refuge from the strains of modern living.” It’s become a piece of decor that rooms - homes - are designed around.
This original advertisement from 1969 visually captures Charles and Ray’s comfy creation the way many of us see it today - as the pièce de résistance of a room. It’s a joy to look at as much as it is to sit in.
While it’s known that industrial designer Irving Harper created the Herman Miller logo, a red letter M, it’s unclear who designed this particular advertisement… It could be the work of either Tomoko Miho or Deborah Sussman - both accomplished graphic artists.
In the late 1960 and early 1970s, Miho worked on advertisements for Herman Miller, working under George Nelson. And then continued sporadic work for the furniture company in collaboration with John Massey and eventually through her own design firm.
Sussman started out working directly with Charles and Ray Eames doing a bit of everything, including designing notable advertisements through the early 1960s. She later did work for Herman Miller in partnership with designer Alexander Girard.

I met Nick at the 2024 Windup Watch Fair in NYC and found his friendliness and passion for curating great vintage ads and prints for fellow enthusiasts contagious. Nick worked with me to find the perfect framing setup for this print and was very communicative and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. He even took the time to dig up additional information about the history and context of the print, which he included when he sent the framed print to me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product, which is now displayed proudly in my office. I highly recommend Ad Patina to anyone who loves cars, watches, sports or vintage artwork of any kind.

Nick really honored the Ray/Charles Eames's quote of "the details are not the details, they make the design" here. I picked up a copy of this at WindUp, fully framed, and the aesthetic choices Nick made really elevated the entire thing, from the color of the wood, the grain, to the choice of matte. I could not be happier at Nick's choices and how thoughtful they were.
