Story and Details
Boeing’s 707 aircraft is the technology credited with ushering in the Jet Age, when commercial travel really took off.
And much like flying first class is thought of as the ultimate jet-setting experience, this original Boeing advertisement from 1961 may be the best travel ad of all time…
And it’s not to be outdone by larger vintage airline posters of the era, that most people are familiar with. After all, this magazine ad spans two oversized pages and is an exhibition of 22 of those colorful, collectible works of art.
The agency that dreamt up this wonderful ad was likely Fletcher Richards, Calkins & Holden, Inc., based in Boeing’s hometown of Seattle, WA. They handled Boeing’s national account in the 1960s.
The creatives made a great call having it spread over two pages. I think it’s the perfect touch, given the ad is highlighting a long range Boeing airplane, which makes it possible for these dream destinations to become a reality.
This mini-poster has a travel agency feel to it. And its fully-booked with imagery of bucket list adventures and aviation history that nostalgia buffs, and those full of wanderlust, will love.

I met Nick at the 2024 Windup Watch Fair in NYC and found his friendliness and passion for curating great vintage ads and prints for fellow enthusiasts contagious. Nick worked with me to find the perfect framing setup for this print and was very communicative and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. He even took the time to dig up additional information about the history and context of the print, which he included when he sent the framed print to me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product, which is now displayed proudly in my office. I highly recommend Ad Patina to anyone who loves cars, watches, sports or vintage artwork of any kind.
