Story and Details
Up there with the most luxurious furniture you can outfit your home in is something people used to pack their outfits in… A Louis Vuitton trunk.
Of course, the ultimate accoutrement to an abode was initially designed to be a functional piece of luggage. But by no means was it simply utilitarian or for the masses. Everything that truly embodies a luxury good - from the craftsmanship to the clientele - are packed in the iconic trunk’s history.
As the beautiful, coveted trunks, with their flat-tops and waterproof coated canvas, voyaged the globe on glamorous trips and exotic adventures, collecting cool travel stickers along the way, they put the wind in the sails of Louis Vuitton turning the family-run business into the fashion empire it is today under LVMH.
But this ad is from a simpler time - certainly before the Maison’s checkered past during WWII.
Like you can pack a lot in a Vuitton trunk, this ad is crammed with so many details to love… Namely it being in French and featuring their famous address on the Champs-Elysées. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s monogramed trunks shown - and suitcases - which if you translate the ad, someone could purchase for up to 30% off and pay in installments over 8 months!

I met Nick at the 2024 Windup Watch Fair in NYC and found his friendliness and passion for curating great vintage ads and prints for fellow enthusiasts contagious. Nick worked with me to find the perfect framing setup for this print and was very communicative and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. He even took the time to dig up additional information about the history and context of the print, which he included when he sent the framed print to me. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product, which is now displayed proudly in my office. I highly recommend Ad Patina to anyone who loves cars, watches, sports or vintage artwork of any kind.

Nick really honored the Ray/Charles Eames's quote of "the details are not the details, they make the design" here. I picked up a copy of this at WindUp, fully framed, and the aesthetic choices Nick made really elevated the entire thing, from the color of the wood, the grain, to the choice of matte. I could not be happier at Nick's choices and how thoughtful they were.
