Story and Details
Rolex marketing is as famous and legendary as their watches. From the company’s earliest days, its co-founder, Hans Wilsdorf, always sought opportunities to promote his brand. Throughout its history, Rolex has proven itself to not only make (a lot) of really good watches, but also advertise prolifically.
But not all Rolex ads are created equal. Case in point is this 1932 time capsule, which stands out so many reasons… certainly for its unique character that’s inherent in the unmatched printing quality of print ads from the time period.
This example speaks to more than the history of Rolex watches. It also represents an early chapter in the story of Rolex marketing. Only a few years prior Rolex designed their waterproof and dust-proof watch aptly called the “Oyster”. And what better way to illustrate their technology to the average potential consumer than by placing a wristwatch in a fishbowl. And what a great picture it is :)
This wonderful brand history was created by the pioneering French advertising firm Wallace and Draeger. The agency was at the forefront of advertising, especially known for their groundbreaking printing techniques, which clearly this 1930s color advertisement with a photograph exhibits. Wallace & Draeger composed advertisements for many companies and luxury houses, including Ford, Lancome, and Hermes to name just a few. The firm also worked with famous artists such as Picasso and Dali.

I am so glad I found Ad Patina and had the pleasure of working with Nick. The level of attention and care Nick has for his customers is unfortunately rare in todays e-commerce experience. He truly brings his passion to what he does and it shines through. The selection of ads here is just incredible!
I was working on creating an ad wall in my home office and was delighted to find this specific ad. I personally have a connection with this ad (my first good watch was this exact model (3520.53.00)). I actually purchased it second hand from a Tourneau in the mid 00’s which makes the ad even more special (the ad I purchased was specifically a Tourneau advert).
Nick, thanks for helping me make my vision a reality and making it a special experience!

From the very first contact, Nick was super friendly and helpful, offering me to track down the ad that was currently out of stock. Within 2 weeks, he was successful and after a very uncomplicated payment process sent me the ad well packaged and it arrived in germany 2 days later. Well done! I will for sure be returning to this awesome site and ship again. You can feel Nicks love for what he does all the way! Thank you again!

I’ve had the pleasure of being a customer of Ad Patina for 6 years, not quite since the start but I’d like to think Nick and I go a ways back now. He’s done several jobs for me and every single time he outdoes himself. It’s been incredible watching his business grow and look forward to many more years of patronage!

I purchased this from Ad Patina some years ago and it's hanging in my home office as a constant view into what many consider to be the Golden Age of advertising. It was a time when brands and ad agencies had big ideas and took bold swings at advertising that manifested into Rolex's famous "you'd wear a Rolex" print ad series and Porsche's bold print ads from the 1980's. As a marketer, these are professional goodness.
